[Intermediate] Week 9

ADULT INTERMEDIATE

Lesson summary 4-24

Please see below for the lesson summary from yesterday:

1. -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다 "can/cannot"

- If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a vowel, add ㄹ to the last syllable as a final consonant and add -수 있어요/ -수 없어요

- If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -을 수 있어요/ -을 수 없어요 after the verb stem

- -(으)ㄹ 수 없어요 = 못 (ex. 먹을 수 없어요 = 못 먹어요)

- Change the endings of 있다/없다 to make it into different tenses (past: 운동할 수 있었어요/운동할 수 없었어요, present: 운동할 수 있어요/운동할 수 없어요, future: 운동할 수 있을 거예요/운동할 수 없을 거예요)

2. -(으)러 가다/오다 "to go/come in order to (verb)"

- ex) 밥 먹으러 가요, 공부하러 가요

- If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a vowel, add -러 가요/와요 (ex. 자러 가요/와요) - If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -으러 가요/와요 (ex. 먹으러 가요/와요)

- Change the endings of 가다/오다 to make into different tenses. (past: 주러 갔어요, present: 주러 가요, future: 주러 갈 거예요)

3. -(으)ㄹ게요 "I will" to express strong intent, commitment, promise

- If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a vowel, add ㄹ to the last syllable as a final consonant and add -게요 - If the last syllable of the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -을게요 after the verb stem

- Difference between -(으)ㄹ게요 & -(으)ㄹ 거예요

-(으)ㄹ게요 talks about your decisions & intentions that you commit to with the listener, just like your promise to that person. It can only be used with the subject "I" and CANNOT be used to form a question. -(으)ㄹ게요 also implies that my intentions are generally decided at the time of speaking and it can only be used with action verbs

  • -(으)ㄹ 거예요, the future tense verb, talks generally about one's future plans & intentions and it can be used with any subject as well as to form a question and a statement. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 also clearly indicates that my future plans were decided before the time of speaking and it can be used with both action and descriptive verbs

4. Additional vocabulary 치다 "to hit" & 하다 "to do" and some sports and musical instruments that go with each verb (ex. 테니스를 치다, 볼링을 치다 vs 축구를 하다, 태권도를 하다)

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much and have a great week!

감사합니다.
